Improving Maritime Safety Training with XR Technology
The i-MAR-XR project aims to transform maritime safety training through the innovative application of extended reality (XR) technology. This collaborative effort between ShipReality Research Ltd. and Alpha Marine Engineering seeks to address critical safety awareness gaps among maritime operators by providing immersive, interactive, and context-aware training experiences.
The project’s key objectives are to develop an advanced digital twin of a cargo ship using cutting-edge 3D capture technologies, create a comprehensive documentation library for selected engine room machinery, design and develop immersive XR applications that integrate vital information, visualizations, and real-time operational support scenarios, and integrate an AI-powered assistant to provide guidance and support.
Technology
The technical approach combines the strengths of both partners, leveraging ShipReality’s XR visualization expertise and Alpha Marine Engineering’s deep understanding of maritime safety protocols.
The i-MAR-XR project aims to significantly improve maritime safety awareness among operators, enhancing their preparedness for handling machinery tasks and emergencies. By leveraging XR technology and advanced digital capture methods, it is envisioned that new standards for immersive training experiences will be set, ultimately driving safer and more efficient maritime operations worldwide.
Five technical phases will be undertaken:
- Geometric Digital Twin Creation
- Collection and Processing of Ship Documentation
- Development of an LL-based AI Assistant
- XR Application Development
- Integration and Testing of the application
