eXtended Reality for Maintenance and Inspection Training
X-MAIN is an XR-based educational simulator that transforms how robotic maintenance and troubleshooting are taught.
Developed collaboratively by University of Alicante, MetaMedicsVR, SAFA Schools and University of Skovde, X-MAIN builds upon the consortium’s previous success with X-RAPT (from Master Open Call 1), expanding its capabilities into the field of robotic maintenance.
X-MAIN enables learners to safely explore, diagnose, and repair virtual robotic systems without requiring physical equipment. The system recreates realistic industrial maintenance environments where users perform inspections, identify faults, and execute corrective actions using hand tracking and voice commands instead of traditional controllers.
Technology
The project integrates adaptive learning, multimodal interaction, and real-time feedback, providing an accessible, hardware-agnostic solution deployable through the VIROO® platform.
The simulator trains users in preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and safety procedures aligned with ISO/TS 15066 and EN ISO 10218 standards.
It provides immersive, interactive training, eliminating the high costs and safety risks of traditional robot-based labs.
By merging academic expertise with industry-ready technology, X-MAIN democratizes advanced robotics education. It enhances employability, supports sustainable industrial upskilling, and offers a scalable model for integrating immersive maintenance training across educational and corporate ecosystems in Europe and beyond.
